More about Kahla…..

What brought you to Powell River?: I first came to Powell River in the spring of 2020, visiting from Florida during what was meant to be a short vacation. The mountains, ocean, and natural beauty of this community instantly captured my heart. Then the world changed—COVID travel restrictions left me unable to return home, and I suddenly found myself teaching virtually from here. When I lost my job back in the U.S., I decided to view it not as a setback, but as a sign: maybe I was meant to be here. I began working at a local daycare and quickly saw how great the need for quality early learning spaces was, with long waitlists everywhere. When the center I was working at closed unexpectedly, I realized it was the perfect moment to bring my lifelong dream to life. With the encouragement of family, friends, and the support of this incredible community, I founded The Lollipop Guild Learning Center. What began as an unexpected detour has grown into a journey filled with meaning, resilience, and deep gratitude for the place I now call home.

When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?: When I’m not at The Lollipop Guild Learning Center, you’ll usually find me outdoors, exploring the mountains, trails, and shoreline of Powell River with friends and family. I also love quiet moments—curling up with a good book by the fire and recharging with the simple joys that remind me why I fell in love with this community in the first place.

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a kid? : As a child, I first dreamed of becoming a mother. But as I grew, I noticed how much impact teachers had on my friends and me—especially when we struggled to meet expectations. I realized I wanted to be a teacher in any capacity, to make learning joyful, supportive, and encouraging for every child.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?: Believe in yourself, even when the path feels uncertain, and remember that kindness and curiosity will guide you farther than you think.

What do you love most about your career? : I love helping children who need it most and supporting their families along the way—it’s the heart of everything I do.

More about… The Lollipop Guild Learning Center.

The Lollipop Guild Learning Center is a heart-led early learning community where curiosity is celebrated, kindness is taught, and every little learner finds the courage to reach their full potential. Our classrooms are filled with laughter, discovery, and just the right amount of wonder—helping children build the brains, bravery, and big hearts they’ll carry with them long after they’ve left us.

At LGLC, we believe early education should feel like both an adventure and a safe landing place. Our play-based approach encourages exploration, creativity, and confidence, while nurturing each child’s social and emotional well-being. Each day offers opportunities to discover new strengths, connect with peers, and learn that kindness is the greatest kind of magic.

Families are at the center of our story too. We walk hand in hand with parents, building strong partnerships that support children every step of the way. Together, we celebrate milestones, navigate challenges, and create a sense of community that feels like home.

The Lollipop Guild Learning Center isn’t just preparing children for school—it’s preparing them for life, with courage, compassion, and confidence lighting their path. And while we may not hand out ruby slippers, we make sure every child leaves us believing they already have everything they need to shine.
